Position: Grossing Tech I (Day) (Temp)
Location: New York

Grossing Laboratory Technician I

Job Purpose/Overview:
The Grossing Laboratory Technician I prepares, trims, and processes tissue specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential function.

  • Meet minimum production standards for the department.
  • Properly identify, orient, ink, and trim submitted tissues per SOP and related protocols while ensuring the utmost quality.
  • Produce accurate and legible grossing notes with code description that provide the pathologist with a clear understanding of the sections taken.
  • Communicate with and respond to pathologists, transcription, and lab coordinator via email communications.
  • Identify problems and special handling cases.
  • Trim tissue for specific re‑gross requests when requested in a timely manner.
  • Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance of various machines and equipment.
  • Exercise judgment in evaluating and reporting results.
  • Report any technical or QC problems to the lead tech or supervisor.
  • Cross‑train and develop knowledge of multiple specialties within the department/lab.
  • Follow applicable SOPs, including safety and quality procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Restock supplies as needed.
  • Participate in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation.
  • Consult with senior peers on non‑complex tasks to learn through experience.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Shift: Tuesday to Saturday 11:30am to 8:00pm (5 days)

Training: Tuesday to Saturday 5:30am to 2:00pm

Target Pay: $24.50 per hour

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's degree in science, biology, or other life sciences strongly preferred.
  • Coursework in anatomy and physiology required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Laboratory skills, including setting up, running, and reading lab tests and operating laboratory instruments.
  • Knowledge of lab equipment and procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology and histology procedures and equipment.
  • Attention to detail and organized with ability to multi‑task in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to exchange accurate information.
  • Proficiency in the English language, allowing participation in team meetings and accurate entry of data into company systems.
  • Positive, can‑do attitude.
  • Fast and accurate typing skills for data entry.
Work Conditions
  • Stationary position for up to 2 hours at a time.
  • Operating a computer and other laboratory equipment accurately and efficiently.
  • Occasional bending, kneeling, stooping, or crouching.
  • Required to lift, move, and carry up to 40lb.
  • Observing details at close range.
  • Extended hours may be needed.
  • Laboratory environment with potential biohazards mitigated by mandatory use of personal protective equipment.
  • Work under close to moderate supervision.
  • Potential exposure to zoonotic agents and hazardous chemicals; safety procedures applicable.
