The Division of Endocrinology within the Department of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center invites applications for a research position at the Associate Research Scientist level.

The Associate Research Scientist (ARS) will contribute to research funded by the Freedom Together Foundation aimed at uncovering the mechanisms of enteroendocrine cell reprogramming. The long‑term objective of this project is to develop a therapeutic strategy for type 1 diabetes by converting enterochromaffin cells into insulin‑producing cells.

The ARS will lead the characterization of cellular gut organoids across developmental and differentiation stages using biochemical, genetic, and cell‑biological approaches. The role also includes significant involvement in scientific communication—drafting manuscripts, managing the publication process, and presenting findings at professional venues in the Division of Endocrinology.

Responsibilities
  • Mouse husbandry — maintaining mouse colonies and performing PCR‑based genotyping.
  • Rodent metabolic testing — conducting intraperitoneal and oral glucose tolerance tests.
  • Hormone and metabolite analysis — measuring circulating hormone and metabolite levels using ELISA.
  • RNA analysis — performing RNA isolation, reverse transcription, quantitative PCR, and RNA‑sequencing workflows.
  • Fluorescent immunohistochemistry — preparing and staining tissue samples for imaging‑based analysis.
  • Flow‑assisted cell sorting — isolating specific cell populations for downstream experiments.
  • Organoid characterization — analyzing gut organoids at various developmental and differentiation stages using biochemical, genetic, and cell‑biological techniques.
Minimum Qualifications

PhD or equivalent degree in Nutritional Sciences.

Preferred Qualifications

Ideally, the candidate will bring at least three years of experience and demonstrated proficiency in the relevant scientific disciplines and technologies outlined above.
