General Description

PREP Research Associate

This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas.

Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.

Research Title

Postdoctoral Researcher

The work will entail

Researcher will develop a thermometer based on atomic fluorescence intensity ratios. This research project will explore several novel and high-risk techniques for realizing a primary temperature sensor in a compact package. This will require operating a locking multiple lasers to atomic transitions, fiber optic design and operation, multilevel rate equation simulations, and careful characterization of systematic effects.

Key Responsibilities will include but are not limited to
  • Perform experimental tasks toward realizing a primary thermometer base on rubidium atoms
  • Data analysis
  • Disseminating project results via peer-reviewed publications and public presentations
Qualifications
  • PhD in Physics or a related field
  • Experience is required in two or more of the following areas:
    • frequency stabilization of laser systems
    • Python programming
    • temperature metrology
    • modeling population dynamics with a set of coupled rate equations
