Job Description

This position involves conducting experiments and analysis on projects that aim to identify new drug targets for antimalarial drug design for Malaria Drug Accelerator (MalDA) – a consortium of 17 malaria research labs and industry partners. The candidate for this role will culture malaria parasites, conduct cellular and molecular biology experiments, prepare presentations on behalf of the Fidock lab to the main MalDA group and attend working group meetings.

It will also involve close liaison with the lead coordinator of MalDA in the Fidock lab.

Responsibilities
  • Functional Knowledge:
    Working knowledge of basic cellular and molecular biology, flow cytometry, microscopy, and scientific methods of analysis. Assist with experimental design and data analysis.
  • Problem‑Solving:
    Use analytical skills to solve moderately complex problems based on guidelines, protocols, and procedures. Troubleshoot as needed.
  • Decision Making/Autonomy:
    Work within standard operating procedures (SOPs) and policies to properly and effectively execute experiments. Prepare monthly meeting updates with the immediate supervisor.
  • Technical Expertise:
    Operate and maintain equipment, software, and instruments used in the project. Perform instrument calibration and maintenance.
  • Communication:
    Present experimental data. Participate in monthly meetings between the Columbia University (Fidock lab) and UCSD (Winzeler lab) where updates are expected.

Specific skills and/or knowledge:

  • Understanding of basic scientific methods.
  • Proficiency in cellular and molecular biology techniques, microscopy, and basic biological data analysis skills.
  • Work performed during regular business hours; some flexibility is possible or desired.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or a related STEM field.
