Research Scientist, Data Scientist, Genetics / Genomics, Clinical Research
Position Summary
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Research Scientist in the Mostafavi Lab at the Center for Human Genetics and Genomics at NYU School of Medicine. The role provides scientific leadership in statistical and computational genetics research. The research program focuses on understanding the genetic basis of complex traits and diseases and developing improved methods for disease risk prediction.
The candidate will work at the intersection of statistical genetics, population genetics, and computational biology, developing and applying novel analytical frameworks to large‑scale genetic datasets to translate genetic discoveries into biological insights and clinical applications. The senior scientist will partner closely with Dr. Mostafavi, lead the lab’s research agenda, and mentor trainees.
- Lead and execute independent research projects in statistical genetics and complex trait genomics
- Develop and implement novel computational and statistical methods
- Analyze large‑scale genetic and genomic datasets
- Mentor postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and research associates
- Contribute to grant proposal preparation and scientific writing
- Collaborate with internal and external research groups
- Supervise day‑to‑day research activities and provide technical guidance to team members
PhD and 3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Preferred QualificationsCandidates should hold a PhD in statistical genetics, human genetics, computational biology, statistics, or a related quantitative field, with a strong publication record in complex trait or statistical genetics. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in developing and applying statistical methods for genetic data analysis, advanced programming skills in Python or R, and experience with high‑performance computing and large‑scale genetic datasets.
Postdoctoral research experience, including grant writing, is highly desirable. Additional expertise in statistical genetics methodology development, polygenic risk prediction, genetic architecture of complex traits, functional genomics data integration, or population and evolutionary genetics is preferred. Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently and lead research projects are essential.
