Job Description
The Columbia Genome Center and Single Cell Core within the Department of Systems Biology seek a highly motivated and detail-oriented Staff Associate I to join our team on a full-time basis. The successful candidate will carry out sophisticated and cutting-edge experiments including but not limited to sample processing, experimental design, and planning, providing expert technical guidance to postdoctoral researchers, and faculty, managing Aviti and Nanopore user base, inventory, and training of new users, and attending to the laboratory needs for nextgen and single-cell cores which include: lab management, ordering, inventory management, financial management, IT coordination, equipment repair and maintenance, compliance, updating and maintaining research protocols, training updates, and certifications.
Responsibilities- Functional Knowledge: 30% Knowledge and understanding of the field of next-generation sequencing, in particular how the field supports the broader research of the Columbia scientific community. A special focus on single cell techniques. Interact daily with researchers to provide technical expertise.
- Problem Solving: 10% Applying analytical skills to help problem-solve with other staff associates and the Director.
- Decision Making/Autonomy: 10% Works independently to design and execute projects with minimal supervision, including in collaborative research environments. Expected to show a medium level of initiative and independent judgement.
- Technical Expertise: 30% Required to implement established protocols to support projects, using a comprehensive understanding of research techniques, software and instruments.
- Communication: 20% Assist collaboratively research groups, explain complex information. Contributing in preparation of publications (manuscripts, funding proposals). Contributes to scientific manuscripts.
- Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in specific research field required (e.g. genomics, bioengineering, molecular biology). 4 years of experience preferred.
