Research Support Assistant 3 (Center for Dementia Research)

Dr. Abid Hussaini's laboratory at the Nathan Kline Institute in Orangeburg, NY, is seeking a skilled Research Technician to join our team investigating the neurobiological basis of neurodegenerative diseases, with a focus on Alzheimer's disease (AD). The lab employs a range of cutting-edge techniques, including in vivo electrophysiology, cognitive testing, optogenetics, and chemo genetics in transgenic mouse models of AD. The successful candidate will work independently and support multiple projects, developing and implementing efficient methods for performing and analyzing experimental data in our wet lab setting.

Job Duties:

  • Independently conduct experiments on mouse models of AD using various techniques, including: anesthesia administration, drug delivery, stereotaxic surgeries, behavioral testing, in vivo electrophysiology, tissue processing and sectioning, immunohistochemistry, fluorescence and confocal microscopy
  • Develop and optimize research protocols, adapting standard procedures when necessary
  • Organize and analyze electrophysiology, behavioral, and histological data
  • Contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, grant applications, and presentations
  • Present ongoing work at weekly lab meetings and contribute to scientific discussions
  • Collaborate with postdocs and graduate students on project-related tasks
  • Supervise and train junior staff or students in laboratory techniques
  • Manage daily laboratory operations, including maintaining lab stocks and inventory, managing chemical inventories and safety records, ensuring compliance with lab safety regulations, providing general lab support as needed
  • Serve as a technical resource for other research staff, assist in troubleshooting experimental issues and optimizing protocols
  • Stay current with the latest developments in neuroscience research techniques

Job Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Neuroscience, Biology, or closely related scientific fields

Minimum of 2 years of relevant wet lab research experience

Strong understanding of experimental design, scientific rigor, and statistical analysis

Hands-on experience working with rodents, including behavioral testing

Experience with histological techniques and microscopy

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

Meticulous attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate experimental records

Preferred

Qualification:

Experience with advanced histology techniques and fluorescence/confocal microscopy

Proficiency in rodent stereotaxic surgery, including virus injections

Experience with electrophysiology, optogenetic or chemo genetic techniques

Knowledge of neurodegenerative disease biology, particularly Alzheimer's disease

Experience with data analysis software (e.g., R, Graph Pad Prism, ImageJ)

Prior experience in a neuroscience or neurodegeneration research lab

Publications or presentations at scientific conferences
