Microbiology Description
The laboratory of Dr. Lorraine Symington in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Columbia University Medical Center is seeking a Staff Associate I to support investigations into the mechanisms of DNA damage repair and genome integrity.
The Staff Associate will perform research on the mechanisms of DNA damage repair and genome integrity. Specifically, he/she/they will investigate the mechanism by which replication‑coupled nucleosome assembly facilitates the repair of collapsed replication forks. The applicant must have experience in routine yeast molecular methods, including cell transformation, genomic DNA extraction, PCR genotyping, genetic crosses, and Southern blot hybridization.
Position Breakdown- Functional Knowledge (10%):
Knowledge of the research subject and scientific methods by analysis of published papers and attendance at seminars - Problem‑Solving (15%):
Utilizes strong analytical skills to troubleshoot experimental procedures. - Decision Making/Autonomy (15%):
Works within guidelines to carry out assigned duties in design and conduct of specific experiments, the adaptation of relevant technology, and the analysis of data. - Technical Expertise (50%):
Ability to perform routine yeast molecular methods, including cell transformation, genomic DNA extraction, PCR genotyping, genetic crosses, and Southern blot hybridization - Communication Skills (10%):
Presents data at lab meetings and conferences and participates in manuscript preparation. - Leadership:
No supervisory responsibilities.
