Research Scientist
Position Summary
We are seeking a Scientist to perform hands‑on surface analysis of polymeric and biocompatible materials with a focus on surface characterization by ToF‑SIMS and AFM. This role is within the Microscopy and Surface Science R&D group, providing analytical services, expertise, and support to internal and external customers pertaining to vision and vision care products. Additional responsibilities include providing critical support for manufacturing and operations.
The position will contribute to R&D projects and participate in problem solving throughout product life cycles (development, pilot, and mature manufacturing).
- Characterization of polymeric materials using ToF‑SIMS and AFM to understand the relationship between surface chemistry, surface structure, and wetting behavior.
- Interpretation of complex datasets collected across multiple techniques to provide an understanding of surface properties.
- Develop new approaches to characterize the surface properties of polymeric and biocompatible materials used in contact lenses.
- Analysis of materials using techniques including ToF‑SIMS, XPS, AFM, TEM, and contact angle measurements.
- Serve as analytical representative and function as a technical lead for research and development activities within a larger project team.
- Provide analytical support of manufacturing and operations with problem‑solving activities.
- PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or relevant field with 0‑3 yrs experience, or MS with 5+ yrs experience preferred in a medical device or FDA regulated industry.
- Extensive knowledge of ToF‑SIMS including data acquisition techniques, analysis methods and preferred experience with principal component analysis (PCA).
- Experience with AFM operation and preparation of samples, preferably including hydrated/immersed sample analysis.
- Preferred experience with TEM operation and preparation of samples, including image analysis, microtome cross‑sectioning, ion milling, and cryogenic techniques.
- Preferred experience in performing and interpreting interfacial energy and surface energy by contact angle or wettability measurement.
- Preferred experience with a range of methods for chemical characterization of surfaces (XPS, Raman, FTIR).
- Preferred experience with hydrated room temperature and/or cryogenic sample analysis.
- Creative and effective problem‑solving skills to approach varied issues throughout product life cycles and ability to apply scientific principles to a broad range of technical assignments.
- Ability to develop working relationships with various internal core competencies and to project influence across the organization.
- Willingness to support a wide range of customers from R&D to plant‑level problem solving.
- Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, and organizational skills, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Medical, dental, eye health, disability and life insurance beginning on your hire date.
- 401(k) plan with company match and ongoing company contribution.
- Paid time off – vacation (3 weeks prorated upon hire), floating holidays and sick time.
- Employee Stock Purchase Plan with company match.
- Employee incentive bonus.
- Tuition reimbursement (select degrees).
- Ongoing performance feedback and annual compensation review.
