Position Summary
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Research Technician, Per Diem, Temporary.
The Research Technician performs technical laboratory duties and/or fundamental data analysis in support of research projects. The laboratory analyses at this level may involve sophisticated techniques that are generally learned on the job. This position works on grant or research projects and performs specific analytical laboratory procedures, usually limited in number and repetitive. The position conducts data recording and preliminary analysis and may prepare graphs and charts for publication.
Work at this level is non‑exempt and represents a basic level of scientific contribution involving some theoretical knowledge. This work differs from Biological Scientist positions in that standardized procedures and protocols are used. Research Technicians perform preliminary data analysis and may produce graphs and charts for publication, rather than conducting final analyses and drafting portions of publications.
- Performs basic lab duties under general supervision as well as more advanced duties under direct supervision.
- Performs standard laboratory procedures such as maintaining cell cultures using sterile technique, radioisotope labeling, preparing slides with staining techniques, and performing assays for protein, RNA, DNA, or other cellular components.
- Processes human blood, stool, and urine for specimen isolation and storage.
- Performs routine technical tasks and assists in the general maintenance of the lab.
- Applies general techniques in biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell culture; participates in standard lab experiments.
- Coordinates the repair and preventative maintenance of lab equipment.
- Assists in experiments using established protocols and procedures, and records results of experiments.
- Breeds, genotypes, and cares for laboratory animals; performs common techniques such as tail clipping, ear tagging, and blood collection for biomarker determination.
- Performs standardized experimental protocols.
- Orders laboratory equipment and supplies, calibrates instruments, and prepares laboratory equipment for use.
- Maintains proper stock of required lab supplies, reagents, and inventories.
- Keeps records of the conduct and outcome of laboratory analyses; may enter data into a database.
- Monitors the work of student assistants.
- Maintains laboratory notebooks and cloud‑based work record keeping in the Benchling platform.
- Prepares graphs, charts, and tables from experimental results for inclusion in presentations and publications.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the organization's service standards and incorporates them into the performance of duties.
- Cooperates, communicates, and relates well to all members of the medical center community.
- Listens carefully to others to respond appropriately, answer questions, or obtain needed information.
- Communicates ideas, problems, suggestions, and messages in a timely and effective manner.
- Maintains the confidentiality of all research information.
- Demonstrates practical oral and written communication skills.
- Recognizes problems as they occur and, through the application of appropriate policy/procedure, determines and/or recommends the appropriate solution.
- Seeks guidance as necessary for the performance of duties and asks appropriate questions when in doubt.
- Utilizes reference sources/materials to ensure accuracy in performing job tasks.
- Advises appropriate personnel of situations/problems requiring intervention or follow‑up attention.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) is a mandatory requirement.
- Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Life Sciences or a related field with one year of experience. Advanced training beyond basic lab training will be accepted in lieu of experience, as assessed by the hiring Principal Investigator.
- Effective oral and written communication skills required.
- Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) is a mandatory requirement.
Hourly: $30.57 - $30.58.
