Temporary Laboratory Assistant

Temporary Laboratory and Research Technician

Hudson Valley Research Laboratory

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS)

Highland, New York

About the College

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University's second-largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy, and environmental resources; and social, physical, and economic well-being.

The Hudson Valley Research Laboratory is a critical resource for farmers in the Hudson Valley and Eastern New York State. This area is a significant agricultural region where tree fruit likes apples and pears; stone fruit like plums and cherries; berries and small fruit like blueberries and strawberries; and vegetable crops - particularly onions, tomatoes, and sweet corn-making up the majority of production.

We provide growers with a non-biased approach to research and problem solving.

What We Need

As a member of the team, you will assist with experiments involving greenhouse and in-field plants. You will provide routine to moderately complex technical lab support for a research program/facility. Other duties include:

  • Provide routine and moderately complex technical field and laboratory support for research programs, including processing and preserving samples and following established protocols to complete experimental objectives.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining standard field and laboratory records.
  • Assist with research projects, including field experiment set-up and monitoring, data collection and management, sampling, related laboratory processes and extension activities both onsite and offsite.
  • Assist with maintenance, upkeep and potential redesign of experimental plots, including but not limited to pruning, weed control, planting, irrigation, pesticide application, infrastructure maintenance and repair.

We are looking for a talented individual with an excellent work ethic who appreciates agriculture and working in a research lab as well as outdoors. Specifically, we need someone who has the following:

  • High School Diploma and 2+ years of experience in a laboratory setting or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite – including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel and familiarity with Outlook.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position and have reliable transportation as well as have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver's license and be cleared to drive for university business.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

If you possess these experiences and skills, this may be the role for you! There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, including:

  • Previous experience operating hand tools, tractors or machinery.

This is a six-month temporary, part-time position at 27 hours/week that is contingent upon available work, funding, and performance. This on-site position is located in Highland, New York.
