Position Summary
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Associate Research Scientist
- Per Diem. In this role, the successful candidate TANGL seeks a per diem Research Associate to support computational research on brain aging, Alzheimers disease, resilience, and multimodal biomarker discovery. This project-based, part-time role emphasizes rigorous computational biology, reproducible workflows, and integrative modeling across molecular, clinical, cognitive, and physiological data. The Research Associate will work closely with the PI and collaborators to develop focused analyses supporting manuscripts, grants, and lab infrastructure.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Initiates, interprets, organizes, executes, and coordinates research assignments critical to department's mission.
- Formulates and conducts research on problems of considerable scope and complexity.
- Explores subject area and defines scope and selection of problems for investigation through conceptually related studies or series of projects of lesser scope.
- Makes decisions and recommendations that have a major impact on extensive scientific research activities.
- Develops new ideas that promote current research. Exercises a high degree of creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in planning, organizing, and guiding extensive scientific research programs and activities of outstanding novelty and/or importance.
- May manage the operations of a lab for the Principal Investigator by supervising Post Docs and technicians. Oversees the maintenance and upkeep of all instruments and laboratory facilities.
- Ensures timely and accurate completion of research projects.
- May provide students with technical guidance and direction in the operation of various sample preparation techniques, extraction lines, and equipment as well as general laboratory practices and safety protocols.
- May seek grant funding from external sources in support of their independent research projects with consent of the PI and the Department Chair. May participate in writing grant proposals.
- May be responsible research/lab quality control and compliance.
- May develop protocol for the collection and quality of research data.
- Develops research techniques and methodologies.
- May determine and establish laboratory policies, procedures and practices.
- Maintains a thorough knowledge of the advances in specialized fields through attendance of scientific conferences.
- May make significant contributions to scientific papers. Is a resource/ author/ co-author for reports and presentations.
- May provide recommendations for equipment purchases and for the redesign of lab space.
- May coordinate the activity and experimental design between various labs, scientific staff, and collaborators. Identifies and resolves technical problems.
- May serve on internal committees to help further goals of research projects and bring new expertise to the research program.
- Analyze approved biological, clinical, cognitive, biomarker, and physiological datasets relevant to aging and neurodegeneration, including genomic, epigenomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and neuropscyhological data.
- Develop and document reproducible workflows in Python and/or R.
- Perform statistical and computational analyses such as differential expression/epigenomic analysis, pathway enrichment, network/co-expression analysis, knowledge graphs, longitudinal modeling, machine learning, and data visualization.
- Contribute to multimodal data-integration projects.
- Summarize literature, participate in laboratory meetings or presentations, and contribute to figures, methods, manuscripts, abstracts, presentations.
- Multimodal aging cohort analyses: integrate cognitive, biomarker, proteomic, genomic/epigenomic, clinical, and physiological data to model trajectories of brain aging.
- TANGL computational infrastructure: build repository structures, data dictionaries, pipeline templates, and visualization workflows to support future lab projects and trainee onboarding.
- Knowledge graph and systems-biology modeling: use biological knowledge graphs, network methods, or interpretable machine-learning approaches to test hypotheses linking molecular signatures to clinical phenotypes.
- B.S./B.A. in computational biology, bioinformatics, genetics, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, data science, statistics, computer science, physiology, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
- Proficiency with Python and/or R and comfort working in a command-line environment.
- Experience analyzing biological, clinical, physiological, or other high-dimensional datasets.
