Description

The Suh Lab at Columbia University Irving Medical Center is seeking an Assistant Professor of Research to lead experimental initiatives investigating the fundamental mechanisms of human aging. We are looking for an intellectually curious scientist who can continually generate novel research hypotheses and drive the lab’s research direction. The successful candidate will spearhead projects exploring the genetic and epigenetic drivers of systemic aging, including but not limited to reproductive aging and aging-related diseases.

A primary focus will be the application of advanced stem cell engineering—specifically the differentiation of stem cells into ovarian cell types, brain cell types, and other specialized lineages required for the laboratory, and advanced gene-editing tools (e.g., CRISPR/Cas9 systems) to dissect age-related phenotypes and their underlying biological mechanisms. This leadership role requires a high degree of independence in designing experimental frameworks and overseeing the laboratory s diverse research portfolio.

Responsibilities
  • Innovation & Grant Leadership:
Proactively generate a continuous stream of original research ideas and lead the development of high-impact grant proposals (e.g., NIH R01, R21) to secure independent and supplemental funding.
  • Scientific Direction:
Design and oversee complex experimental strategies to investigate the molecular basis of aging.
  • Technical Mastery:
Lead the implementation of cutting-edge cell biology and molecular biology techniques, including but not limited to sophisticated gene-editing protocols, viral vector design, directed stem cell differentiation protocols, and advanced cell culture models.
  • Project Oversight:
Manage the execution of multiple high-priority projects, ensuring rigorous data standards for the lab’s ongoing studies and clinical trial support.
  • Strategic Publication:
Direct the analysis of experimental data and lead the preparation of high-impact manuscripts; represent the lab’s research at national and international forums.
  • Mentorship:
Provide high-level strategic guidance and technical mentorship to postdoctoral scientists, graduate students, and research staff to maintain a culture of excellence and innovation.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent degree in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Cell Biology, Stem Cell Biology, Neuroscience, or a related field.
  • A distinguished record of high-impact publications and a proven track record of independent scientific thinking and creative problem-solving.
  • Extensive expertise in specialized laboratory methodologies, including but not limited to stem cell manipulation, CRISPR-based screening, and advanced animal models of aging.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience or a strong interest in aging-related research and biology.
  • Demonstrated experience in stem cell engineering, particularly the generation and maintenance of ovarian or neural/brain cell types.
