Location: New York

The RENEW Institute seeks an experienced, versatile scientific writer and communicator to serve as the GLRC STREAM Communications Manager and:

  • Translate GLRC scientists’ research findings into understandable by a general audience, in a range of forms: white papers for state and federal policymakers; “comments” published in peer reviewed journals; and “explainers” for GL stakeholders such as managers of wastewater treatment facilities, etc.
  • Write and disseminate a bi-annual newsletter.
  • Compose and post content to the GLRC STREAM website (with technical support and web hosting provided by UB RENEW ).
  • Prepare reports for DEC review of GLRC STREAM activities.
  • Liaise with the DEC and other NYS , federal, and international entities and policymakers and scientists and constituent universities within the consortium.
  • Assist the GLRC Program Manager with the drafting of solicitations for the consortium’s Small Grants program.
  • Support educators by assisting with the “translation” of research materials into content suitable for K-12 curricula.

The Great Lakes Research Consortium ( GLRC ) comprises 18 New York State universities that pursue environmental research about Great Lakes ecosystems. Funded by New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation ( DEC ), the GLRC’s relaunch under the leadership of the University at Buffalo is called St
rengthening Research, Education, and Aquatic ecosystem Management (
GLRC STREAM ). A project of Research and Education in Energy, Environment and Water Institute ( RENEW ) at UB, GLRC STREAM leverages existing institutional expertise, infrastructure, and partnerships across New York State ( NYS ).

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physical/natural science, scientific and technical writing ( STW ), technical communication, journalism, English, or other relevant degree.
  • 2-3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Educational background and/or work experience with freshwater ecosystems, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific and technical research papers and concepts into clear, engaging content for diverse audiences across multiple platforms.
  • A strong portfolio of technical writing.
  • Academic or professional experience conducting interviews.
  • Familiarity with style guides (e.g., APA , ACS ) and ability to apply editorial standards consistently.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in engineering, physical/natural science, STW , technical communication, journalism, English, or other relevant degree.
  • 5+ years of related experience.
  • Work experience with GL ecosystems, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Strong portfolio of technical writing focused on GL aquatic ecosystem research, including peer reviewed journal articles, white papers, newsletters, blogs, and/or social media posts.
  • Experience with digital content creation and social media growth tactics, and metrics to demonstrate prior impact.
  • Track record of working independently and cooperatively in a fast-paced environment with multiple and shifting priorities.
  • Recent prior experience launching technical/science communications in a social enterprise or start up environment.
  • Project management skills, including familiarity with PM software and fastidious attention to detail.
  • Experience reporting outcomes and analytics.

Salary Range

Salary Range $70,000 - $80,000
