Cellular Biologist III The Jackson Laboratory | NYSCF New York, New York
We're hiring a Cellular Biologist III to join our Oncology lab, where you'll work hands‑on with patient‑derived organoids to support cutting‑edge research on new and more effective cancer treatments. The Cellular Biologist III works directly under the supervision of the Senior Research Scientist and alongside a team of experienced cellular biologists and cellular specialists. In this production‑focused role, you will interact with an interdisciplinary team of stem cell biologists, data scientists, automation engineers, and software developers in one of the most advanced automated platforms for cell biology worldwide.
The range of duties includes, but is not limited to, project planning, developing methodologies, conducting automated procedures, modifying and updating procedures as needed, data collection and analysis, creating and revising documentation, contributing to reports and manuscripts for publications, and providing communication and instruction. You demonstrate and model effective mental concentration and visual attention. The Cellular Biologist III is expected to lead and mentor junior technical staff and departmental assistants.
The Cellular Biologist III may be required to work flexible shifts that may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays depending on the demands of the research project and/or laboratory operations.
- Primary responsibilities are to perform, monitor, and mentor other biologists in performing automated and manual cell culture and related activities. Sets direction for workflows; serves as technical authority; resolves complex deviations; drives optimization and innovation. Exercises expert judgment in designing experimental or production modifications and is responsible for high‑level troubleshooting.
- Examples of cell culture activities include the handling and processing of primary materials, such as tumor tissues and blood samples, as well as the culturing of tissue‑derived organoids, fibroblasts and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Work collaboratively to perform all necessary protocols for organoid derivation, fibroblast expansion, iPSC expansion and QC, and differentiations on the robotic platform(s) or manually as required.
- Additional project‑related activities include, contributing to molecular, phenotypic, imaging assays, and other in‑vitro assays such as automated drug screenings using 3D organoid systems. Contribute to the design and optimize organoid co‑culture protocols to model the tumor and tissue microenvironments.
- Related activities include the storage and withdrawal of specimens from liquid nitrogen and freezers, and the preparation of media and reagents required for daily work. You will work closely with the laboratory operations team to ensure reagents/consumables inventory is accurately and efficiently supplied.
- Plan and monitor resources needed to operate; maintain inventory control; coordinate space and field questions. You may be required to participate in the monitoring and tracking of resources/expenditures across projects.
- Documentation of results; identify problems, troubleshoot, and analyze variations observed and reported in regular testing protocols. Leads modification, refinement, and adaptation of techniques and procedures, partnering with engineers and other staff to define and implement large‑scale improvements. Documentation and feedback is provided in a variety of ways including the creation and modification of SOPs, filing of tickets to software and automation teams, and leading inter‑ and intra‑team meetings.
- Lead the exchange of information through demonstration and instruction. Other duties as assigned.
- Experience with human/mammalian cell culture, 3D culture systems, and iPSC culture with additional broad expertise in cell and molecular biology techniques, is required. While not required, experience with liquid handling automation is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and improve biological workflows/processes, or have contributed to the development of automation/software tools.
- Demonstrated ability in…
