The collaboration between Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Montefiore Medical Center and Mount Sinai Health System brings state of the art proton therapy treatment to the patients of New York and the surrounding areas.

Position Summary:

The Child Life Specialist will work alongside clinicians and provide supportive care for infant, child, and adolescent pediatric patients and their families at the New York Proton Center. The person in this role will strive to enhance the lives of children and their families through delivering world-class care.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create a welcoming environment. Greet and introduce self and role upon initial contact with patient/family
  • Provide services to pediatric patients based on an understanding of child development and the impact that illness, injury, disability, and hospitalization have on this process
  • Identify teaching, materials and techniques for different age groups and learning needs
  • Provide emotional support and stress reduction techniques during identified stress points
  • Provide pediatric patients with opportunities for play and relaxation, interaction with other children, and personalized attention
  • Develop and execute group activity programs
  • Plan interventions specific to the impact of the health care
  • Provide guidance for the family in accordance with NYPC regulations and procedures
  • Maintain and organize playroom spaces to ensure a safe, welcoming, developmentally appropriate, and engaging environment for pediatric patients and families
  • Monitor playroom supplies and inventory, identify needed materials, and coordinate ordering of toys, games, art supplies, and other age-appropriate resources
  • Create and prepare end-of-treatment celebration materials and activities to recognize and celebrate patients completing their course of treatment
  • Collaborate with the pediatric care team to identify opportunities to personalize end-of-treatment celebrations and other supportive resources for patients and families
  • Record patient care information in the medical record
  • Comply with all New York Proton Center policies related to Privacy Rules established under the Health Information Privacy and Portability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)
  • Perform other job-related duties, as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Child Life, Child Development or closely related field
  • Active Child Life Specialist Certification
  • Prior experience working with pediatric population in a hospital environment
  • Strong technical problem-solving skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Our ideal candidate is familiar with the pediatric population served at NYPC and has experience in the following areas:

  • Pediatric oncology
  • Radiation/Radiology
  • Non-sedated and sedated scans (included but not limited to CT, PET, MRI)
