Research Assistant | Laboratory of Genome Maintenance

Organization Overview

Throughout its lifetime, a cell's DNA is under constant metabolic and environmental assault that can lead to damage. If left unchecked, the resulting genome instability can initiate cancer and a variety of other human disorders. Using Fanconi anemia and other genetic diseases as a backdrop, research in the Laboratory of Genome Maintenance, led by Dr. Agata Smogorzewska, aims to elucidate the pathways that protect organ function and prevent cancer, with a focus on those that replicate and repair DNA.

The Laboratory of Genome Maintenance seeks a research assistant to support our basic and translational work on how DNA repair prevents cancer. A central responsibility will be processing samples from a chemoprevention trial expected to run for three years.

• Process patient samples and perform a range of assays, including genomic DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, sequencing library preparation in support of a clinical trial.
• Generate cell lines with specific DNA mutations, perform survival assays, protein expression analysis, and immunofluorescence
• Maintain the laboratory's database and biobank of patient samples.
• Keep accurate and organized records and meet regularly with the principal investigator.
• Support daily laboratory operations, including inventory monitoring, ordering supplies, and general upkeep.
• Opportunity to develop an independent project as the position progresses

• Bachelor's degree in a life sciences discipline
• Extensive laboratory bench research experience during college or at least one year of full-time research assistant employment
• Tissue culture experience
• Proficiency in standard molecular biology techniques, including western blotting, PCR, and DNA gel electrophoresis
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
• Clear written and verbal communication, critical thinking, and the ability to work independently
• Proficiency with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and a willingness to learn Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Illustrator, and Keynote

• Masters degree in life sciences
• Experience with making DNA and RNA libraries for sequencing

The hiring range provided represents The Rockefeller University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
