General Function

As a Coffee Shop Barista, this position will be responsible for reviewing and filling customer orders for the day, handling food in a safe manner, and ensuring the work area is always clean and neat. Additionally, you will ensure a positive company image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service to customers and team members.

Reporting Relations

Accountable and reports to:
District Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home;
Food Service Director;
Coffee Shop Department Manager.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service by exhibiting care, concern, and patience in all interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store.
  • Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner and attempts to learn and use customers’ names.
  • Assist customers by escorting them to desired products, securing items out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, noting and passing along customer suggestions or requests, and performing other tasks to enhance the shopping experience.
  • Answer the telephone promptly and provide friendly service to callers, including taking customer orders.
  • Takes customer orders at the counter.
  • Works with co‑workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment.
  • Handles food safely and keeps the work area clean and neat; reviews food status for freshness.
  • Ensures an adequate food supply is ready and on hand, follows or develops a production list, and anticipates daily product needs.
  • Prepares and replenishes products as necessary, checks in product, and puts products away, including reviewing invoices.
  • Runs department registers, receives payment, makes change, and performs related cashier duties as applicable.
  • Removes trash in a timely manner.
  • Maintains strict adherence to personal hygiene and dress guidelines.
  • Adheres to company policies and store guidelines.
  • Reports to work on schedule and on time.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Wash dishes as necessary.
  • Order product and supplies as necessary.
  • Price products for customers as necessary.
  • Assist in other areas of the store as needed.
  • Perform special projects and other job‑related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics

Must have the ability to carry out detailed written or verbal instructions, perform simple addition and subtraction, understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions, write identifying information, and request supplies orally or in writing.

Education and Experience

Less than high school or equivalent experience and six months or less of similar or related work experience.

Physical Requirements
  • Perform medium‑level work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
  • Maintain visual clarity at distances of more than 20 inches and up to 20 feet without correction, with color vision, depth perception, and field of vision.
  • Be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions.
Working Conditions

Work is normally conducted in a store environment with significant pressure to meet deadlines and handle multiple priorities. The environment includes exposure to noise, equipment movement hazards, cleaning chemicals/solvents, possible electrical shock, and temperature extremes.

Equipment Used to Perform Job

Standard tools and equipment in a coffee shop environment include disposal, trash compactor, dishwasher, register system, ice machine, pop machine, scales, and knives.

Additional Considerations

Must be 18+ years of age.
