About the Company

A well-established Japanese chemical trading company is seeking an experienced Sales Manager to join its New York office. The company specializes in the import, export, and distribution of chemical products and serves a diverse customer base across North America.

Position Summary

The Sales Manager will be responsible for driving business growth through new business development and strategic account management. This role requires a strong sales professional with substantial industry experience who can independently manage customer relationships, identify market opportunities, and contribute to the company's growth objectives. While the title is Sales Manager, prior management experience is not required.

Key Responsibilities Sales & Business Development
  • Develop new business opportunities and manage existing customer accounts for import/export operations.
  • Identify and pursue strategic growth opportunities within assigned territories and markets.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with customers through regular communication and business visits.
  • Analyze customer needs and provide tailored product and service solutions.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to customers and prospects.
  • Negotiate pricing, terms, and business agreements with customers.
  • Process customer orders and ensure accuracy of sales documentation.
  • Coordinate customer requests, including product documentation, samples, and technical information.
  • Address and resolve customer concerns, including quality issues and shipment delays.
  • Collaborate with suppliers regarding product orders, customer requirements, and market opportunities.
  • Support supplier visits by coordinating meetings, business discussions, and travel arrangements.
  • Prepare regular sales reports, forecasts, and business updates for senior management.
Account Management & Administration
  • Manage key customer relationships and ensure high levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Monitor customer accounts and assist with credit management activities.
  • Prepare sales forecasts, activity reports, and budget-related information.
  • Follow up on outstanding customer payments and support collection efforts.
  • Maintain accurate records of sales activities, customer interactions, and market intelligence.
  • Provide recommendations to management regarding market trends and business opportunities.
Logistics & Cross-Functional Coordination
  • Work closely with logistics, operations, and suppliers to ensure smooth order fulfillment.
  • Provide necessary shipping and documentation support to internal teams.
  • Coordinate communication between customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
Leadership & Strategic Contributions
  • Serve as a senior sales professional and key contributor to the sales organization.
  • Mentor and support junior team members when appropriate.
  • Participate in strategic planning discussions and business development initiatives.
  • Lead or support special projects assigned by senior management.
Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum 7 years of sales experience within the chemical industry or a related industrial B2B sector.
  • Proven track record of business development and account management success.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to travel as required for customer and supplier visits.
Preferred
  • Experience in chemical trading, import/export, distribution, or industrial materials.
  • Japanese language skills are a plus but not required.
  • Experience working in an international business environment.
