Berghahn Books seeks an Institutional Sales & Subscriptions Manager to manage and develop our institutional journal subscription customer base. As an independent scholarly publisher, we pride ourselves on combining innovation with close, responsive relationships with our library customers and partners. Our journals program has been at the forefront of developing sustainable open access models, while bringing subscription management in-house has given us greater insight into our customers, their needs and purchasing patterns.
This role sits at the heart of that approach, combining hands-on responsibility for the subscription renewal cycle with customer relationships, data and opportunities for growth. You will work closely with our Journals and Marketing teams to strengthen retention, develop institutional business and help us make better use of subscription trends and customer data to inform our approach.
- Manage the annual journal subscription renewal cycle across direct and agent customers, ensuring renewals, orders and account changes are handled accurately and on time.
- Maintain institutional customer and subscription records in Subs Flow, developing expertise in the system and helping improve workflows and reporting.
- Build strong relationships with libraries, subscription agents and other institutional partners, supporting customer retention and account development.
- Identify and pursue new institutional prospects and opportunities for subscription growth, including journal collections and open access/S2O participation.
- Monitor renewal performance and customer, subscription and agent trends to identify risks, opportunities and priorities for action.
- Work closely with Journals Marketing to connect institutional customer insight with targeted promotional and outreach activity.
- Coordinate effectively with Finance and Metadata & Platform colleagues on the financial, access and platform requirements that support institutional customers.
- experience in institutional sales, subscriptions, account management or a related customer-facing role, ideally within scholarly or academic publishing;
- an understanding of library customers, subscription models and/or institutional purchasing;
- experience working with subscription, CRM, sales or customer-management systems;
- confidence working with customer and sales data;
- strong organizational and analytical skills with excellent attention to detail;
- excellent communication skills and confidence building relationships with libraries, agents and colleagues;
- a proactive, collaborative approach and the ability to manage multiple priorities during busy renewal periods.
This is a full-time hybrid role (35 hours/week), with approximately three days per week in our DUMBO, Brooklyn office. Candidates should be based within commuting distance (NY, NJ, CT). Salary: $58,000, plus a monthly health stipend to support your individual coverage, giving you flexibility in choosing a plan. All roles are eligible for an annual bonus or profit award, based on company performance.
