In partnership with the Hamlet of Setauket, Cornell Cooperative Extension is proud to continue our shellfish grow‑out program where oysters will be raised to enhance water quality and the natural oyster population. The program offers students a paid internship to learn shellfish aquaculture techniques, including grow‑out procedures, measuring and monitoring growth and survival rates, and tracking water temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen.
The internship runs from July 1 through August 28, 2026, part‑time 12‑20 hours per week, with orientation either virtual or at the Riverhead office.
- Work with the Cornell Shellfish Biologist and Aquaculture Assistant in Setauket, NY.
- Assist with maintenance and upkeep of the shellfish grow‑out system (FLUPSY).
- Assist with the collection of scientific monitoring data for shellfish and water quality.
- Assist the educator with general public information.
- Hamlet of Setauket resident currently enrolled in high school or college.
- Ability to follow instructions carefully.
- Ability to work alone or with some supervision.
- Ability to interact effectively with the public.
- Ability to work outdoors under potentially adverse field conditions and perform physical tasks as needed.
- Knowledge of natural science, plant science or marine science.
- Must be able to lift 40 lbs. and handle heavy gear.
- Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
- Enrolled in a science or marine science program at a local high school.
- Familiarity with or experience in scientific sampling and marine or environmental science.
- Having a driver’s license and a vehicle.
Salary: $17.00 per hour
