In partnership with the Hamlet of Setauket, Cornell Cooperative Extension continues its shellfish grow‑out program to enhance water quality and the natural oyster population. Students from high school and college may participate in a paid internship to learn shellfish aquaculture techniques, growth and survival monitoring, and water‑quality sampling during July1–August
28,2026.
The internship is part‑time (12–20hours per week), located in Setauket, NY, and may include a virtual orientation.
Responsibilities- Work with the Cornell Shellfish Biologist and Aquaculture Assistant.
- Assist with maintenance and upkeep of the shellfish grow‑out system (FLUPSY).
- Assist with the collection of scientific monitoring data for shellfish and water quality.
- Assist the educator in providing general information for the public.
- Resident of the Hamlet of Setauket and currently enrolled in high school or college.
- Ability to follow instructions carefully, work alone or with some supervision, and interact effectively with the public.
- Ability to work outdoors under potentially adverse field conditions and perform physical tasks as needed, including lifting up to 40lbs.
- Knowledge of natural science, plant science, or marine science.
- Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
- Enrollment in a science or marine science program at a local high school.
- Familiarity with, or experience in, scientific sampling and marine or environmental science.
- Having a driver’s license and a vehicle.
Hourly rate: $17.00 per hour.
