Position Overview
Environmental Sampling Technician—Field Sampling Team, Environmental Protection Division, Brookhaven National Laboratory.
Responsibilities- Collect groundwater samples from monitoring wells in accordance with standard operating procedures and monthly schedules.
- Collect groundwater treatment system samples in accordance with SOPs and monthly schedule.
- Maintain a detailed project schedule and monitoring requirements database.
- Communicate with BNL project managers regarding implementation and required modifications to monitoring programs.
- Coordinate with BNL’s contract analytical laboratories for bottle orders and sample shipments.
- Collect environmental, waste, and radiological samples (air; thermoluminescent dosimeters; surface water; sewage) for the Environmental Monitoring Program.
- Collect sewage treatment influent and effluent compliance samples for the State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System program.
- Operate 54‑LT, 6600, and 3230‑DT Geoprobe units to collect soil and groundwater samples.
- Operate hot water pressure washer for decontamination of sample equipment (Geoprobe rods, screens).
- Collect samples in support of the Deer Management program.
- Calibrate and use LANDTEC meter to collect landfill gas data.
- Document all fieldwork on the appropriate chains of custody, sample logs, and field logbooks following BNL SOPs.
- Check instruments daily and calibrate monthly, ensuring yearly manufacturer calibration.
- Conduct work following SOPs, work permits, and job hazard analysis plans.
- Maintain sampling records in accordance with BNL requirements.
- Perform routine maintenance of sampling equipment and monitoring wells.
- Wear personal protective equipment (respirator, Tyvek suit) as required.
- Perform physical outdoor work and operate government vehicles and equipment.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- BS degree in a technical field or equivalent experience, or 4–6 years of relevant work experience with appropriate certifications.
- OSHA 40‑hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training.
- Experience with EPA sampling methods and quality assurance procedures for collection and transport of samples.
- Ability to read and understand sampling plans, procedures, and execute tasks safely with minimal supervision.
- Strong customer focus, teamwork, and detailed orientation.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Computing proficiency, especially with MS Office programs.
- Drivers’ license and willingness to work nights and weekends as required.
- Background in radiation monitoring.
- Experience operating Geoprobe equipment for soil and groundwater sampling.
- Experience with automated sampling equipment (e.g., ISCO samplers) and water quality meters (e.g., YSI).
- Experience sampling other environmental media including air, surface water, soil, flora, and fauna.
Fully on‑site position located at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY. The role may require nights and weekends as needed.
Compensation and BenefitsSalary range: $70,000 – $87,000 per year, commensurate with experience. The laboratory offers a comprehensive benefits program.
