Role Description

Arcadis is seeking an entry‑level Biologist/Ecologist to join our Enviro Socio Permitting team in New York City. The successful candidate will support environmental desktop reviews, data collection efforts, regulatory permitting, construction management, and compliance monitoring and adaptive management. This role works closely with a team of scientists, engineers, and planners, supporting a wide range of clients throughout the region. The candidate must be a team‑oriented individual with excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of managing multiple activities related to environmental compliance and natural resources.

Projects are often fast‑paced, multi‑faced, and geographically diverse. The position requires balancing varying priorities and tasks to work on multiple projects concurrently and meet deliverable deadlines. Arcadis offers a flexible working environment with a hybrid structure. Field work and travel will be required.

Role Accountabilities

As an entry‑level Biologist/Ecologist, you will apply your technical knowledge to work with client teams and provide high quality deliverables for planning and permitting. You will be an important member of the east coast biological team, interacting with other junior biologists/ecologists, senior technical experts, and project managers.

  • Conduct desktop assessments and field surveys (e.g., habitat evaluations and presence/absence surveys) to evaluate potential project impacts to sensitive habitats or special‑status species, and support wetland delineations.
  • Prepare technical reports such as species survey reports, wetland delineation reports, mitigation and monitoring plans, biological assessments, and permit applications.
  • Conduct on‑site construction compliance monitoring for special‑status species and habitat impact avoidance, and monitor mitigation projects to ensure consistency with performance criteria.
  • Support regulatory reviews to minimize impacts to regulated habitats, develop alternative analyses, and complete impact assessments.
  • Travel up to 25% of the time, including overnight travel.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in science (e.g., ecology, wetlands, soil science, water management). Preference for those with soil science coursework.
  • One year of experience in the environmental field or an advanced degree in environmental science or a related field.
  • Knowledge of east coast ecology, wetlands, and habitats, special‑status plants and wildlife, and botanical knowledge.
  • Comfortable working in remote field locations.
  • Proficient using hand‑held Trimble GPS.
