Position: What does a Rat Exterminator do
Location: New York

Overview

A rat exterminator is a pest control specialist who works primarily with rats, and may also handle other mammals such as mice, possums, raccoons, and so forth. These specialists can be found working in many regions of the world and can provide assistance when an exterminator is not available, potentially through local government animal control agencies.

Responsibilities

Historically, rat exterminators used working dogs trained to locate and attack rats. Today, they more commonly employ traps, using live traps to keep the animals alive for relocation or extermination, and lethal traps to kill and then dispose of the dead rats.

Like other exterminators, a rat exterminator evaluates a structure to determine whether rats are present, estimates where they will be found, and assesses the damage they have caused. The exterminator then eliminates the rats and assists a contractor or homeowner with repairing damage and implementing measures to reduce the risk of future infestations, such as recommending that holes be sealed and food be stored in rat‑proof metal containers.

Rat exterminators also work as consultants on prevention. Many clients wish to avoid infestations altogether, so the exterminator can inspect a structure and make recommendations. This type of inspection is often less costly than eliminating an established infestation and can protect a property’s value, particularly when the property is being sold and the presence of rats may be a deal‑breaker.

Rats pose significant concerns in a structure. They can bite people and pets, causing infected abscesses or transmitting disease, and they carry insects that may spread disease. They also cause structural damage by chewing through wiring and supports, and their urine and feces contribute to unpleasant odors and potential health hazards.
