The primary effort of the Habitat Restoration Technician is to implement and provide input to habitat restoration related programming and outreach opportunities to citizens of Suffolk County. The technician will deliver and promote educational program objectives and plans that are developed by the Association Subject Educator II for projects throughout the region. The technician will draw upon existing program resources and recommendations, and coordinate activities with the supervisor and team to address the marine habitat restoration programming needs.
The technician will also deliver and contribute to various field-related projects to help fulfill the Marine Program objectives to enhance natural resources and water quality as needed.
- Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree appropriate to the responsibilities of the position or Associates Degree and 2 years of transferrable program/functional experience may substitute for Bachelor's Degree.
- Minimum of 1-year related work or volunteer experience required in teaching or extension type work.
- Must have a minimum Open Water SCUBA Certification.
- Must possess or be able to complete NYS Boater Safety Certificate.
- Must possess or be able to complete CPR/First Aid and Emergency Oxygen Provider courses.
- Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to handle and manage complex schedules and changing priorities.
- Ability to follow verbal instructions.
- Ability to typically lift 50 or more pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must have computer literacy and be able to work with MS Word and Excel.
- Must be able to meet flexibility to work other than normal work hours (early morning, evening, weekends) as required.
- Appreciate and embrace diversity in all interactions with clientele, staff, volunteers and public.
- Ability to work physically in marine and outdoor environments.
- Ability to work with people, maintain a positive and professional attitude, display commitment and enthusiasm for CCE mission.
- Ability to pay close attention to details and coordinate various activities simultaneously, as well as handle multiple tasks.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and provide input to superiors for planning and decision-making.
- Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
- Ability to meet acceptable background check standards.
- Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
- Coursework and experience in field methods highly recommended.
- Experience with scientific writing for project reports and peer reviewed journals.
- Capability of handling and navigating small boats in coastal waters.
- Experience with towing trailers and launching boats from ramps.
- Experience performing moderately complex tasks while on SCUBA.
- Proficiency in working with global position systems (GPS) and geographic information systems (GIS).
- Experience with creating social media content.
- Salary: $26.44 - $31.25 per hour
- Schedule:
NONEXEMPT – Regular: 40 hours per week - No relocation or VISA Sponsorship available
