Overview

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing pollution. The Bureau of Water Supply (BWS) manages the upstate water supply system, which includes reservoirs, aqueducts, roads, bridges, and watershed lands. BWS’s mission is to reliably deliver clean water and ensure long‑term sustainability.

Responsibilities

As a Scientist, Water Quality Field Intern in the Quality Assurance Division of the Drinking Water Operations Directorate, you will:

  • Perform sample collection and field analysis in the Catskill Watershed with Kingston Field Operations.
  • Conduct laboratory inventory, sample run preparation, bottle packing, and equipment maintenance.
  • Enter and manage data, and update standard operating procedures.
  • Adhere to all environmental, health, and safety laws and DEP policies.
  • Develop a final presentation of your work for the DEP Interns Closing Ceremony.
Minimum Qualifications

As of June of the Program year, the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or a recent college graduate (winter/spring term). Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June – August each year.

Preferred Skills
  • Enrollment at a college/university at the undergraduate level with coursework in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or ecology.
  • Comfortable working from a small boat, at times.
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Familiarity with MS Office, spreadsheets, and large data sets.
  • Strong writing and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Leadership skills, self‑motivation, and the ability to work well independently and with others with minimal supervision.
