Location: New York
Azar Design Co is seeking a qualified Senior Environmental Scientist with 10+years of relevant experience to work on a diverse portfolio of public and private projects, including transportation, parks and green space, university campuses, and stormwater & utility infrastructure. In this role, the successful candidate will provide project coordination including working with more junior staff, perform environmental resource field assessments/studies, perform desktop research on available websites and other resources, prepare permitting reporting documentation and prepare reports on projects throughout New York State.
Key Responsibilities- Work with more junior staff to complete assignments, and serve as a mentor to junior staff
- Coordinate work with other disciplines and other consultants
- Coordinate and perform environmental resource field assessments and studies including: wetlands, streams, invasive species, and threatened/endangered species.
- Complete environmental requirements of both SEQR and NEPA
- Apply standard field practices and techniques using basic field equipment to collect samples of soil, soil vapor, groundwater, surface water, sediment; prepare samples for shipping, and complete chain-of-custody or similar paperwork.
- Use GPS equipment to gather field data, interpret data in the office, conduct QA/QC review of data and identify data gaps. Coordinate preparation of GIS or CAD figures from the data acquisition phase.
- Prepare technical reports, analytical data tables, and collaborate on GIS mapping for project documentation.
- Serve as Site Safety Officer, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and training requirements.
- Conduct compliant asbestos building inspections, quantifications, draft reporting, and project air monitoring. Conduct compliant materials inspections for lead paint, PCB-caulk, mold, and universal waste.
- Coordinate with regulatory agencies and support abatement-phase construction administration.
- Assist in developing asbestos abatement designs, specs, and renovation/demolition project documents.
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, Wetlands, Soils, or a related earth science field + 10 years of experience, or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
- High degree of self-motivation and ability to work independently with limited supervision, as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
- Excellent technical writing skills and ability to prepare environmental reports and permit applications.
- Professional demeanor in written and verbal communications with clients, regulatory officials, and fellow employees.
- Work experience in environmental consulting, with technical expertise in an environmental discipline such as aquatics, vegetation, wildlife, soils, or permitting.
- Experience with assessments and reporting for NYS Department of Transportation, Army Corps of Engineering and NYSDEC projects
- Preferred experience would include ecological field investigations, NYSDEC stormwater inspection training, and preparation of associated reports
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
- Must be trained in wetland and stream delineation
- 40 hour HAZWOPER training and/or annual 8 hour refresher class.
- Current 4-hour Erosion and Sediment Control inspector certification is a plus.
- Ability to work in outdoor environments in a range of weather conditions.
- Ability to travel as needed for project work.
$70,000 to $90,000 depending on experience.
