DescriptionThis position with the NYU Prison Education Program (PEP) will work closely with the Associate Director of College-in-Prison Programs, the Executive Director, and Faculty Director on initiatives to improve technological infrastructure and digital research resources for incarcerated learners. Knowledge in Linus and Airtable is preferred. The role will contribute to research and program development addressing the digital literacy divide in college-in-prison programs, with particular attention to library technologies, offline digital research tools, and pedagogical methods that can support incarcerated students.
The position will assist in the design and implementation of infrastructural assessments, student surveys, and focus groups to better understand digital literacy practices, research needs, and technology use among students and faculty.
Working in collaborating with partners such as the NYU Division of Libraries and other college-in-prison programs, the role will help document existing digital learning resources, library research access, computer lab infrastructure, and security-approved technologies used in prison education settings. This work will contribute to the development of updated digital and pedagogical resources for both currently incarcerated students and formerly incarcerated students preparing to continue their education after release.
The position will also support internal data management processes, including assessing existing data systsems and assisting with the entry, organization, and maintenance of related program records. The position is part-time and hybrid (2 days/week remote and/or in-office at 285 Mercer St. and weekly travel to Wallkill Correctional Facility at 50 McKendrick Rd., Wallkill, NY.)
Position Responsibilities:
- Maintain a regular work schedule of 27 hours/week, 2-3 days remote and/or in person at 285 Mercer St. and 1 day weekly at Wallkill Correctional Facility for collaborative project work with other PEP staff.
- Review, document, and assess current technological infrastructure supporting incarcerated students, including digitial learning platforms, offline intranet systems, computer lab resources, library technologies, and access to digital research materials.
- Identify gaps in digital learning and research resources, including hardware, software, library databases, and security-approved technologies that affect student access to academic materials and research tools.
- Assist in the design and implementation of survey and focus group research with students and faculty to assess digital literacy, research strategies, and pedagogical needs related to technology and library resources in a college-in-prison context.
- Contribute to the development of a programmatic knowledge base documenting approved technologies, specialized technical skills, and digital research resources that support teaching, learning, and academic research within college-in-prison environments.
- Participate in strategic planning meetings and initiatives with institutional partners and liaisons, including the NYU Division of Libraries, the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS), and other college-in-prison providers.
- Support the collection, organization, and management of program and student-level data, including assisting with digital records systems, documentation, and internal data management processes.
- Assist with research and writing for grant proposals and institutional reports aimed at expanding digital literacy programming, improving library technology access, and advancing research on technological equity in college-in-prison programs.
In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the hourly base rate for this position is $55/hour. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
Per NYU's remote-work policy, this position is expected to be hybrid.
Qualifications- Preferred experience working with digital hardware (PC and Mac) and software programs (Linux, Python, Windows 10) including Airtable
- Preferred experience working with adult learners, people impacted by criminal legal system and/or systems of structural marginalization
- Ability to pass Department of Corrections security clearance process (details discussed in interview)
