Per Diem Public Safety Officer Job Summary

Public Safety Officers foster and maintain a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors across all St. John’s University campuses and branch properties. Officers report directly to Supervisors and do not manage staff.

Essential Functions
  • Respond to all calls for assistance including crimes in progress, past crimes, vehicle accidents, personnel injuries, medical and aviation cases, fires, smoke, burglar and duress alarms and render aid as required.
  • Render first aid, CPR, and utilize an Automated External Defibrillator.
  • Operate a patrol vehicle safely and proficiently in areas of high pedestrian traffic.
  • Conduct field investigations concerning violations of law, University policy, and the student code of conduct; gather and compile information and prepare reports.
  • Engage with campus community departments to check on needs or security concerns.
  • Patrol assigned posts or areas on foot, bicycle, scooter, or in a motor patrol vehicle.
  • Actively participate in crime prevention and community policing activities.
  • Be mindful of current crime trends on and around campus grounds and take appropriate action to deter such activity.
  • Direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic and enforce campus parking regulations.
  • Perform general security services, including locking and unlocking buildings, rooms, laboratories, and roadway gates.
  • Assist students who require escorts due to injury or accessibility issues.
  • Assist motorists having battery, tire, or door lock problems.
  • Perform campus access control at security kiosks by documenting vehicle license plates and issuing parking permits.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Competencies

Candidates must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, be customer service oriented, and willing to take the extra step to assist people in need. They must be certified in administering CPR or First Aid and proficient in the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator.

Work Environment

Officers respond to routine and emergency calls for service on and around the university, taking action as necessary. Positions operate in a professional office environment and outdoors as required, using standard office equipment such as PCs and printers.

Physical Demands
  • Patrol on foot, bicycle, scooter, or in a motor patrol vehicle.
  • Climb multiple flights of stairs to conduct operations.
  • Stand or sit for 4‑8 hours.
  • Occasionally lift or move up to 30‑50 pounds.
  • Communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
  • Operate departmental equipment.
Environmental Conditions

Must work during emergencies such as fires, smoke, gas leaks, construction, pandemics, active shooter situations, and inclement weather conditions.

Travel

May be required to work at any of the university’s branch campuses within the United States.

Required

Education and Experience
  • Prefer a minimum of 5 years security experience.
  • New York State Fire Guard License, to be obtained within six months of employment and renewed every two years.
  • High School diploma or equivalent; college or university degrees preferred.
  • Current New York State security guard license and a clean motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • Ability to perform duties while wearing an N‑95 respirator mask as mandated by OSHA regulations.
  • Pass a comprehensive background investigation.
  • Availability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.
Preferred

Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent; college or university degrees preferred.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent; college or university degrees preferred.
  • Current New York State security guard license and a clean motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • City of New York Fire Department Certificate of Fitness, Citywide Fire Guard for Impairment (F-01). If not obtained at time of hire, must be obtained within ninety (90) days of employment.
Other Duties

Officers may be required to work operational and special event overtime assignments, shift hours for department needs, and stay past assigned tours in emergency situations such as snow storms.

Compensation

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the hourly salary for this position is $25.00/hr compensation may vary based on scope and responsibilities, candidate’s experience, education, skills, internal equity, market, and organizational considerations.

Location

The position may relocate to any of St. John’s University physical locations at any time.
