Education Level: High School Diploma (or equivalent) required. Preferred:
Associate's Degree or coursework in Criminal Justice, Public Safety, Emergency Management, or a related field.
Salary Range: $20.00 - $23.00 per hour.
Position SummaryReporting to the Director of Campus Safety, the Campus Safety Officer provides safety, security, and exceptional customer service to students, faculty, staff, parents, visitors, contractors, and vendors throughout The Spence School. The role maintains a safe learning environment by monitoring facilities, controlling access, conducting patrols, responding to emergencies, assisting with operations and special events, and supporting the school's mission.
Schedule- Days Off:
Sunday and Monday - Tuesday – Thursday: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. (to be determined upon hire)
- Friday:
Schedule to be determined based on operational needs. - Saturday: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- Maintain a professional and welcoming presence at assigned security posts.
- Monitor surveillance cameras, access control systems, and visitor management systems.
- Screen and assist visitors, contractors, vendors, and deliveries before granting access to school facilities.
- Conduct routine interior and exterior patrols of school buildings, grounds, and surrounding property.
- Secure and unlock buildings, classrooms, offices, and other school facilities as required.
- Maintain accountability for assigned department equipment, including radios, keys, access cards, tour devices, and emergency equipment.
- Identify and report safety hazards, maintenance concerns, and security vulnerabilities.
- Monitor and communicate security conditions and unusual activity using established departmental procedures.
- Respond to medical emergencies, fire alarms, security incidents, disturbances, and requests for assistance in accordance with departmental procedures.
- Assist with evacuations, lockdowns, shelter-in-place events, fire drills, and other emergency operations.
- Coordinate with school administrators and first responders during emergency incidents.
- Prepare accurate and timely incident reports and required documentation.
- Answer department telephones and monitor radio communications.
- Review daily post orders, General Orders, and operational updates at the beginning of each shift.
- Maintain daily activity logs and required reports.
- Assist with student arrival and dismissal, special events, athletic events, performances, and other school functions.
- Provide directions and assistance to students, faculty, staff, parents, and visitors.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Campus Safety.
Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in campus safety, school security, law enforcement, military, hospitality security, or a related public safety field.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment during emergencies.
- Ability to prepare clear and accurate written reports.
- Working knowledge of CCTV systems, access control systems, visitor management systems, radios, and basic computer applications.
- Ability to walk throughout campus for extended periods.
- Ability to climb stairs frequently.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods while performing security duties.
- Ability to assist injured or disabled individuals during emergencies.
- Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, lift, and carry equipment as needed.
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
