Position Summary
The Armed Security Supervisor establishes a safe, secure, and supportive learning environment for students, faculty, and visitors. The role manages the campus security team, oversees daily security operations, and coordinates emergency crisis protocols. The supervisor maintains a highly visible, protective presence while building positive relationships with teenagers and school staff. Unlike traditional public schools, charter high schools require a nimble, community-focused approach to discipline and safety, balancing strict physical security with restorative de-escalation techniques.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Active Threat Response: Serve as the immediate responder to mitigate, prevent, or neutralize active threats or hostile incidents on campus.
- Emergency Liaison: Act as the primary point of contact for local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency medical services.
- Drill Coordination: Schedule, conduct, and evaluate mandatory school safety drills, including fire, lockdown, active shooter, and severe weather protocols.
- Weapon Compliance: Carry, secure, and properly maintain authorized firearms and defensive tools according to federal, state, and charter board guidelines.
- Personnel Supervision: Supervise, schedule, and evaluate the performance of unarmed school security shift guards.
- Training &
Coaching:
Train security staff on school policies, physical security techniques, legal guidelines, and student-focused de-escalation. - Reporting & Compliance: Audit and maintain accurate records of daily logs, visitor registries, safety violations, and formal incident reports.
- Security Audits: Regularly evaluate campus technology, including CCTV feeds, access control systems, perimeter alarms, and metal detectors.
- Access Control: Enforce stringent visitor-screening protocols, ensuring all entrants verify identity and wear appropriate badges.
- High-Traffic Supervision: Direct security positioning during morning arrivals, lunch periods, afternoon dismissals, and extracurricular high‑school events.
- Student Rapport: Build positive, professional relationships with high schoolers, acting as a trusted safety advocate rather than strictly a punitive figure.
- Conflict De‑escalation: Intervene in student altercations or verbal disputes using trauma‑informed care and minimal force frameworks.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required; an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or Public Safety highly preferred.
- Minimum of 8–10 years of experience in law enforcement, military service, or high‑level armed security.
- Prior supervisory experience managing security personnel, preferably within an educational or juvenile justice environment.
- Valid NY State Armed Security Guard License.
- Valid State Exposed Firearm Permit (plus annual qualification records).
- Prior law enforcement experience preferred (e.g., retired police officers).
- CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification.
- Certifications in non‑violent crisis intervention or school‑resource‑officer training are strong assets.
- Must pass rigorous federal, state, and local criminal background checks, fingerprinting, and drug screenings.
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods across a multi‑building or multi‑floor campus.
- Physical agility to sprint short distances, climb stairs quickly, climb fences, and intervene physically in violent situations if necessary.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
