The Fire Alarm Technician plays a key role in maintaining the safety and security infrastructure across campus. This position performs independent maintenance, troubleshooting, installation, and documentation of all fire alarm, security, and life safety systems. The technician ensures all work meets regulatory standards and supports compliance efforts through accurate record keeping. This role may occasionally support general building maintenance tasks.
Fire & Security Systems- Maintain, test, upgrade, and repair fire alarm systems, intrusion alarms, call boxes, and related life‑safety equipment.
- Install and service low‑voltage wiring, electronic components, and system cabling.
- Repair and replace emergency and exit lighting fixtures.
- Perform inspections and testing of emergency lights, exit signs, and fire extinguishers; complete all required documentation.
- Maintain required inspection logs and testing records for internal oversight and regulatory agencies.
- Follow established procedures for system modifications and maintain accurate supporting documentation.
- Submit detailed notes and work summaries in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Provide guidance and technical oversight to Fire Alarm Technician I staff, ensuring code‑compliant work practices.
- Assist in evaluating equipment upgrades and long‑term maintenance needs.
- Communicate regularly with supervisors, peers, and campus departments via email and established reporting channels.
- Request materials and supplies following approved purchasing procedures.
- Occasionally perform building maintenance tasks aligned with training and experience.
- Participate in snow and ice removal, including use of shovels, snow blowers, plows, and other equipment as assigned.
- Follow all safety protocols and attend required safety and equipment‑training sessions.
- Minimum 4 years of technical maintenance experience, including at least 2 years working with fire detection and signaling systems.
- NICET Level II Certification (required).
- Associate degree in Electrical Technology or related field (preferred).
- Valid NYS driver’s license.
- Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Basic computer proficiency (Windows, Outlook).
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Physical capacity to climb ladders, lifts, and stairs, and perform extensive walking, standing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and reaching.
