Position: Maintenance Technician I
Location: New York

Department: Transitional Living - DHS Women's Shelter

Location: 3rd Avenue Women's Shelter - 968 3rd Ave., Brooklyn NY, 11232

Schedule: Full-time, 35 hours per week Monday - Friday. Ability to work a flexible schedule and overtime as needed – including some early mornings, evenings, and weekends.

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

Salary Range: $19.00/hour - $20.00/hour

Position Summary

The Maintenance Technician 1 is assigned to one site and is responsible for the general safety conditions of the assigned facility. Ensure cleanliness and maintain building(s) in good condition and repair to ensure the safety and comfort of the staff and clients and protect the Program’s physical facility. Ensures compliance with regulatory environmental standards. Performs minor construction projects consisting of HVAC, plumbing, electrical and carpentry work.

Makes routine rounds, performs tests and equipment readings. Performs diagnostic testing and repairs equipment and systems (i.e., HVAC, electrical systems). Performs exterior grounds maintenance.

Responsibilities
  • Performs duties under the general supervision of Maintenance Supervisor and Facilities Manager.
  • Inspect property and buildings for life/safety issues and take immediate corrective action.
  • Identify building maintenance needs.
  • Maintain clean work area, vehicle and shop.
  • Establish and maintain professional and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Process Work Orders in a timely fashion.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on buildings by performing a variety of skilled carpentry, electrical, painting, plastering, drywalling, plumbing, heating, limited air conditioning and mechanical repair work, door hardware, keying, exit and emergency lighting.
  • Repair electrical lighting systems and fixtures.
  • Perform basic level plumbing work including the installation, repair and replacement of plumbing fixtures including sinks, toilets, faucets, water heaters and pipes; clear obstructions from water and sewer lines.
  • Assist in general repair work involving rough carpentry and painting tasks.
  • Perform basic carpentry work including the repair of stairs, joisting, walls, windows, siding, doors and other carpentry work.
  • Inspect building facilities to identify building maintenance needs; complete inspection and provide reports to Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Prepare maintenance reports, recommend and perform basic corrective maintenance as required.
  • Install, maintain and repair a variety of floor coverings such as carpeting, tile, linoleum and wood.
  • Proficiency in operating hand, mechanical and power tools and equipment.
  • Perform basic maintenance and repairs of mechanical and power tools.
Qualifications
  • High school graduate or GED preferred.
  • Three years’ experience in facilities maintenance.
  • Professional, courteous and friendly demeanor.
  • Ability to perform basic appliance repair.
  • Basic ability to read and interpret sketches, diagrams and blueprints.
  • Compassionate, patient, and empathetic approach when interacting with clients.
  • Repair and maintain a variety of mechanical equipment.
  • Read and interpret sketches, drawings, diagrams and blueprints.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds above the waist and carry heavy objects.
  • Use a personal computer and relevant computer software.
  • Operate with a high level of personal organization.
  • Driver’s license required – clean driving record upon hire and pass a motor‑vehicle history check demonstrating a safe driving history.
  • Awareness of city policies, procedures, regulations, and codes related to facility maintenance and repair.
  • Basic knowledge of hazards and necessary precautions applicable to building and mechanical maintenance. Preventive maintenance requirements work preferred.
  • Knowledge and implementation of safe work practices.
  • Be a self‑starter and work independently in the absence of supervision.
