Duties
- Repair, maintain, and install plumbing fixtures and appliances such as sinks, shower baths, commodes, drinking fountains, dishwashers, valves, pneumatic controls, gas and water meters, gas hot water heaters, and other gas appliances, heating systems and controls, steam equipment for laundries, kitchens, cafeterias, water pumps, irrigation, and hydrotherapy equipment.
- In cases of malfunction or breakdown, discuss the problem with the user, visually inspect fixtures or equipment, and use appropriate test equipment such as pressure and vacuum gauges to determine cause and location of trouble.
- Follow technical manuals, codes, diagrams and experience to plan work procedures, make repairs, and order replacement parts indicating quality, type, and any other materials required.
- Makes required repairs or adjustments, or directs others to perform such activities.
- Installs or directs installation of fixtures and appliances following diagrams, codes and experience.
- Plan and lay out installation, alteration, and repair of high‑ and low‑pressure pipe systems carrying water, steam, air, or other liquids or gases.
- Plan new installations, alterations to existing ones, and major repairs consistent with specifications, plans, and plumbing codes.
- Review building plans and working drawings to determine required work aids and sequence of installation.
- Locate and mark positions of pipes, connections and passage holes; cut openings as required.
- Measure, cut, thread, and bend pipe to required angle according to plan.
- Assemble and install variety of metal and nonmetal pipe and fittings.
- Join piping by threaded, caulked, wiped, soldered, brazed, fused, or cemented joints; weld holding fixtures to steel members when needed.
- Test pipe system for leaks by filling with liquid or air and reading pressure gauges.
- May draw rough sketches or prepare plans to scale and estimate labor, materials, tools and equipment necessary for the project.
- Assemble materials, tools, and equipment needed to complete work per plans.
- Supervise and instruct others in plumbing work, assign tasks to crew, give verbal instructions and demonstrations, observe and inspect work to ensure quality.
Non‑competitive:
Four years of full‑time experience in plumbing under a skilled tradesperson providing training equivalent to a program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained through technical courses at a school or branch of the Armed Services; or successful completion of the two‑year Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter traineeship or a two‑year plumbing training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association‑Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.
- Successful completion of the traineeship and training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade‑specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math coursework, 45 hours of technical communications coursework, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading coursework with an average of “C” or better. The traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on‑the‑job training.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
Benefits- Salary range:
Trainee 1 $ 42,641;
Trainee 2 $ 47,695;
Full Plumber & Steamfitter $50,425 – $61,548. Local Bidding Agreements honored for CSEA positions. - Preference given to OPWDD employees impacted by closures. Candidates must maintain eligibility for Medicare and Medicaid.
