Location: Brasher Falls
Responsibilities
- Perform all standard duties of a Service & Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) per NYS Civil Service classification.
- Diagnose and correct faulty vehicle and equipment operation, including engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulics, electrical, and control systems.
- Overhaul, adjust, and repair gaseous fuel engines, clutches, transmissions, differentials, ignition systems, wiring, lighting, fuel and cooling systems, braking, hydraulic systems, steering, suspension, body, cab, and frame components.
- Overhaul and rebuild starters, generators, compressors, pumps, spreaders, small engines, mowers, and other equipment such as track vehicles, loaders, cranes, shovels, lifts, hydraulic excavators, boats, etc.
- Diagnose and repair electronic engine control systems, anti‑lock brake systems, air brake systems, and air conditioning.
- Perform cutting and welding tasks as required.
- Supervise subordinate staff, making assignments and inspecting work.
- Maintain shop safety, housekeeping, proper use of PPE, and redline faulty or unsafe vehicles and equipment.
- Make road trouble calls and test drive equipment.
- Use personal protective equipment, including respirators, in remote or adverse weather conditions.
- Respond to after‑hours emergencies, weekends, holidays, overtime, travel and overnight travel as required.
- Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for diagnosing and repairing vehicle and equipment systems, or an associate’s degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.
- Valid NYS DMV Inspector’s license for both heavy and light duty vehicles; must obtain within 6 months of appointment.
- Class B CDL with towing endorsement; must obtain within 12 months of appointment, no air‑brake restriction.
- Computer knowledge for maintaining work orders on MMS, scheduling work requests, and researching technical manuals and parts catalogs.
- Knowledge of the state procurement system for payment of outside repairs and replacement parts.
- Ability to negotiate difficult terrain, work in remote areas and adverse weather.
- Must be able to lift and move objects up to 75 pounds.
- Must complete an annual Health and Safety Program, including medical monitoring, fit testing, and 40‑hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification.
- Subject to Federal Omni Bus Transportation Employee Testing Act (OTETA) of 1991 for drug and alcohol testing.
- Hourly appointment funded through 3/31/2027, with potential continuation beyond that date.
