Job Summary
Responsible for work in maintenance/construction crews that maintain, repair, and install substation equipment, including high‑voltage AC switch gears, circuit breakers, line switches, traction power transforms, rectifier units, bus work, motor‑generator frequency changers, storage battery systems, and chargers. Also performs basic housekeeping duties within the substation compound and other duties deemed as substation electrician work by the Chief Engineer.
Duties and Responsibilities- Overhaul and maintain silicon rectifiers and associated auxiliary equipment.
- Install and maintain various types of oil, air, and vacuum circuit breakers, motor‑generator sets, and other contractor‑assigned electrician duties.
- Read and follow schematics, diagrams, and blueprints.
- Troubleshoot and test wiring, relays, and control circuits using various tools and meters.
- Provide protection for contractors and forces around persons from hazards within the substation and along the right of way.
Education and Experience
- Four‑year high school diploma or its equivalent (GED or TASC).
- Four years of electrical experience.
- Ability to read electrical schematics, use volt‑/ohm meters, and troubleshoot electrical circuits.
- Ability to climb high‑voltage racks.
- Pass substation electrician qualifying examination.
- Valid driver’s license.
- AAS Degree in Electrical Technology or Electrical Engineering.
- Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MTA drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.
- Safety‑Sensitive position.
- Selection process may include pre‑screening assessment and interview. Candidates must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of the posting and possess a satisfactory work history.
