Responsible for the maintenance and construction of all LIRR structural assets across the entire territory, including repairing wooden railroad bridges, trestles, tunnel supports, stations, platforms, overpasses, underpasses, retaining walls, and performing a variety of conventional carpentry, construction, concrete work, painting, general masonry work, tiling, and taping.
Duties and Responsibilities- Repair wooden railroad bridges, trestles, and tunnel supports.
- Repair/replace structural members of bridges.
- Perform a variety of concrete and conventional carpentry and construction work, including painting, general masonry work, tiling, taping, spackling, wallpapering, and snow removal/shoveling.
- Utilize and/or handle hand and power tools.
- Dig trenches and holes.
Education and Experience
- Must have a four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED or TASC) approved by a State’s Department of Education or recognized accredited organization.
- Prior carpentry or related construction experience.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit at time of hire.
- Ability to demonstrate good oral and written communication skills.
- Must be able to give as well as receive and understand oral and written instructions.
- Must be able to read simple blueprints or drawings.
- Must provide own hand‑tools and customary carpentry tools (list provided by LIRR).
- Trade school/vocational training in carpentry.
- Completion of an apprenticeship program.

- After 1,825 Calendar Days – 100%
- Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years, or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.
