Position OverviewThe Mechanic is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of plumbing and mechanical systems in commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings. The role supports a broad range of building systems—including hydronic heating/cooling, pumps, boilers, mechanical equipment, and piping systems—for City-owned properties within the Asset Management portfolio at NYCEDC, specifically the Brooklyn Army Terminal Campus and other assigned properties. The position reports to the VP of Operations in Sunset Park.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Perform basic plumbing repairs such as fixing leaks, replacing faucets, clearing minor clogs, repairing toilets and sinks, and handling small piping and fixture replacements.
- Conduct routine inspections of plumbing systems, replace cartridges and other simple components, and document maintenance activities.
- Execute preventive maintenance, emergency repairs, and general facility services including electrical, gas, water & sewer, HVAC, carpentry, painting, masonry, and janitorial duties.
- Respond to service calls from building occupants promptly and provide technical guidance to maintenance personnel as directed.
- Document work orders, logs, and inspection forms accurately; follow safety protocols, including lockout/tagout and PPE requirements.
- Assist licensed plumbers, HVAC technicians, and electricians as needed and monitor contractor work and vendor coordination.
- Participate in emergency response activities, including 24/7 availability and snow removal duties at assigned sites.
- Maintain an onsite presence at the Sunset Park Campus (5‑day per week) with travel to the main office at One Liberty Plaza as required.
- OSHA 30 Hour
- FDNY S12, S13, and S95 Supervisor Certifications
- Heavy equipment training (Backhoe, Skid‑Steer, etc.)
- Aerial Work Platform Certification
- CPR/AED/Basic First Aid Training
- TWIC Certification
- High School diploma or equivalent; vocational training or certification is a plus.
- 5+ years of experience in maintenance, inspections, and repairs.
- Basic understanding of plumbing and mechanical systems.
- Proficiency with handheld and desktop computer devices for recording work orders.
- Valid NYS Driver License with a clean driving record.
- Knowledge of construction and handyman repair techniques; experience with electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and related trades.
- Experience using hand tools, power tools, and materials for construction-related trades.
- Knowledge of New York City and requirement to reside within NYC 180 days of hire.
$55,000 - $57,000 USD
