Building Maintenance, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Location: New York
The Consulate General of Canada in New York is seeking to staff two Maintenance Technician positions. The incumbents provide general maintenance and repair services for mission properties, including the Chancery, Official Residences, and other Government of Canada properties in New York.
The incumbents perform hands‑on maintenance and repair work in areas such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and general building maintenance. Responsibilities include responding to maintenance requests, troubleshooting issues, supporting preventative maintenance activities, coordinating minor repair projects, and liaising with contractors to ensure work is completed according to required standards.
The Maintenance Technicians are also responsible for maintaining tools, equipment, and supplies, supporting operational requirements (including moves and event setups), and following health and safety practices.
AREA OF SELECTIONThis selection process is open to all applicants who are residing and legally authorized to work in the USA, who meet all the essential qualifications and whose applications are received by the closing date. Please note that the successful candidate must reside in the New York Tri‑State area (NY, NJ, and CT) at the time of appointment.

ESSENTIALQUALIFICATIONS
All essential qualifications will be assessed. Methods of assessments and screening of candidates may include but are not limited to: verification of credentials, resume and letters of presentation; interviews, exams and practical tests; presentations or other types of assessments.
EDUCATION- Completion of high school (secondary school) or an equivalent certification such as a GED.
Note:
Candidates will be required to provide proof of their education.
- An intermediate proficiency level (reading, writing, comprehension, and speaking) in English.
In order to perform the duties relevant to this job, the following experience is required.
- Minimum two (2) years’ recent hands‑on experience in general building maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance.
All competencies will be assessed. All competencies must be met prior to appointment.
- Technical knowledge of general building maintenance and repair practices, including preventative maintenance
- Knowledge of hand and power tools and their safe operation
- Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety practices
- Ability to prepare basic scope of work, coordinate, monitor, and inspect maintenance and repair work performed by contractors
- Certification from a recognized trade or technical school;
- Ability to communicate in French (oral and written).
- Recent experience coordinating maintenance or repair work, including preparing basic scopes of work and cost estimates
- Recent experience using hand and power tools safely and effectively
- Recent experience handling and maintaining tools, materials, and supplies.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Hours of Work: Normal hours of work for this position are 40 hours per week.
- Location of work:
Work is performed on‑site at the Chancery, Official Residences and Staff Quarters. There are limited opportunities for remote working. - Occasional overtime, including evenings and weekends, may be required with advance notice.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 lbs).
- Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.
- Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada.
