8‑hour shift between the hours of 5:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday – Friday with the ability to flex shift based on priorities.
Description: The Boiler Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and preventative maintenance of campus heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and related mechanical systems. The position supports academic, residential, athletic, dining, and administrative facilities to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable building operations. The role supports the college’s mission by maintaining campus infrastructure and appearance in accordance with Paul Smith’s College safety, operational, and customer service standards.
The Boiler Technician works independently and collaboratively with campus operations in accordance with Paul Smith’s College safety, environmental, and customer service standards.
Duties & Responsibilities Systems Maintenance- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair boilers.
- Monitor all related systems for performance and respond timely to all complaints and emergency service calls.
- Perform preventative maintenance and replace and/or repair boilers, air handling units, rooftop units, split systems, and heat pumps.
- Maintain proper refrigerant handling and EPA compliance.
- Complete assigned work orders accurately and timely.
- Assist with general maintenance projects when needed.
- Coordinate with outside contractors and vendors.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and instruments.
- Support campus emergency response and after‑hours activities as necessary.
- Assist with seasonal shutdown/startup procedures for residence halls and campus buildings.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Operations & Student Work Director or designee.
- Follow all OSHA, EPA, and PPE safety procedures.
- Maintain required certifications and licenses.
- Ensure compliance with campus safety and environmental regulations.
- Maintain accurate maintenance and preventative maintenance records.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 3–5 years of boiler and HVAC maintenance and repair experience highly preferred.
- Valid NY State certifications and licenses related to boilers and HVAC.
- EPA Universal Certification required.
- Must have working knowledge of commercial HVAC systems, chilled water systems, hot water and steam systems, building automation systems, and electrical troubleshooting.
- Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Strong troubleshooting and customer service skills.
- Ability to work with a broad range of diverse individuals and groups to form a safe and inclusive campus community.
- Active driver’s license and driving record acceptable to our insurance carrier.
- Work is typically performed in indoor academic and residential spaces with normal temperature ranges for the season.
- Fast‑paced environment throughout the year.
- Noises related to mechanical rooms and related noise and vibrations should be expected.
- Working spaces may be crowded based on traffic and equipment configuration.
- Work may be performed in non‑routine spaces, including rooftops.
- Ability to lift 50–75 lbs.
- Routine lifting between 10–35 lbs.
- Frequent lifting and carrying light to moderate weight equipment or tools.
- Utilize assistive devices and equipment as necessary.
- Perform physically active work including bending, walking, climbing stairs, and standing for extended periods.
- Occasional need to reach overhead to perform work duties.
- Climbing various staircases across the campus including access to rooftops should be expected.
- Frequent standing, climbing ladders, bending, kneeling, and working in mechanical spaces.
- Utilize mobility assistive devices and equipment as necessary.
- Manual dexterity is needed for handling all related equipment and tools.
- Good vision is required, with corrective lenses as necessary.
- Good hearing is required with assistive devices as necessary.
