Union Helper

About The Role

As a CBRE Union Helper
, you will perform technical and non‑technical general building maintenance and minor repair duties. This position is part of the Engineering and Technical Services team and is responsible for providing support, preventive maintenance, and repairs on mechanical and HVAC equipment and systems.

• Assist the engineering staff in operating the building mechanical and HVAC systems
• Assist in the maintenance and repairs of all equipment incidental to the operation of the building mechanical and HVAC systems
• Perform general labor work as assigned (receiving deliveries, loading, unloading, moving materials, and putting away stock)
• Perform building checks of mechanical areas and log conditions during daily rounds
• Identify and report maintenance hazards or other property condition concerns
• Perform housekeeping functions within all mechanical and HVAC spaces (e.g., sweeping, mopping, painting)
• Perform other minor repairs under supervision
• Respond quickly to emergency situations, summoning additional assistance as needed
• Follow a set procedure in the performance of repetitive tasks or job activities

• At least five of the following certificates of fitness issued by the New York City Fire Department:
  • O‑A35 – Operate and Maintain Air Compressors
  • O‑F60 – Fire Guard for Torch Operation
  • O‑G60 – Torch Operation
  • O‑S12 – Citywide Sprinkler System
  • O‑S13 – Standpipe System
  • O‑S14 – Standpipe System, multi zone
  • O‑S95 – Supervision of Fire Alarm Systems
  • O‑F01 – Citywide Fire Guard for Impairment
  • O‑P98 – Supervise Fuel Oil Transfer
  • O‑P99 – Low Pressure Oil Burner Operator
• High School Diploma, GED, or current enrollment in a 2‑ or 4‑year college program or technical school
• May require a valid driver’s license
• Physical requirements include stooping, standing, walking, climbing stairs/ladders, and the ability to lift or carry heavy loads of 50 lbs. or more
• Ability to develop skills to perform basic activities in own job
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
• Organizational skills with an inquisitive mindset
• Simple math skills (calculation of percentages, discounts, and markups)

Helpers assist the engineer or mechanic in the performance of their duties and perform tasks appropriate to their skill level outside the presence of an engineer or mechanic as directed by management. The position is designed as a step toward becoming an engineer. After January 1, 2011, the helper classification will not be available to newly hired helpers on a career basis except by mutual consent of the employer and union.

The negotiated rate for the Union Helper position is $85,841.60 annually ($41.27 per hour). Benefits include dental, health, life, and vision insurance.
