Duties
Under the direction of a plumber, a plumber's helper will assist with emergency and scheduled plumbing repairs of standpipe and sprinkler systems. The duties include, but are not limited to:
- Assist the plumber with installation, inspection, maintenance, repair, and testing of standpipes and sprinklers. Set, maintain, and repair plumbing equipment and accessories.
- Carry tools, working material, and equipment; prepare the work location. Move heavy valves and piping fixtures. Cut, drill, or prepare openings as necessary for the installation, maintenance, or repair of fire safety equipment and clean work area.
- Perform any additional work related to fire safety and the good of the Authority.
Travel to developments citywide is a requirement, with the frequency determined by the supervisor of the work unit.
Certificates of Fitness for Citywide Sprinkler Systems (S-12) and Standpipe Systems (S-13) are required.
Due to the existence of a civil service list, candidates must have permanent civil service status for the title of Plumber’s Helper to be considered.

Additional Information- These positions are open on a direct transfer (lateral) basis only; they are not open as a promotional opportunity.
- Employees applying for transfer must have served a period of one year at their current location and in their current title and level (if applicable).
Minimum Qualifications
- Three years of full‑time satisfactory experience as a plumber's helper or apprentice plumber, or
- Not less than one year of the experience described above plus sufficient plumbing training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade or technical school or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of three years of acceptable experience. The apprenticeship must be recognized by the New York State Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Labor, or an apprenticeship council recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor.
Each year of approved, relevant training is equivalent to six months of full‑time experience, up to a maximum of two years of satisfactory experience.
