Stationary Engineer

Duties & Responsibilities

You will operate, maintain, and adjust steam power plant and electromechanical building equipment under supervision.

• Operate, maintain and adjust boilers, furnaces, engines, pumps, heat exchangers, generators, motors, and associated equipment in public buildings, municipal pumping stations and incinerators.
• Make periodic inspections of equipment and perform minor repairs.
• Perform preventive maintenance.
• Takes responsible charge of a watch and directs subordinate personnel.
• May operate control consoles in control rooms.
• Prepare requisitions for materials and spare parts.
• Instruct and train subordinates and other personnel.
• Read and log meters, gauges, and other recording devices.
• Keep records and make reports.
• As directed, inspect low pressure boilers in accordance with the unified inspection procedure of the NYC Department of Buildings.

• A valid license for High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer issued by the NYC Department of Buildings, maintained during employment.
• For certain positions, a certificate of fitness for Standpipe, Automatic Sprinkler and/or Air Compressor issued by the NYC Fire Department within ninety days of appointment.
• Other positions may require a valid Certificate of Equivalent Instruction and/or a Restricted Asbestos Investigator Certificate issued by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection and/or a Certificate of Qualification for Refrigerating Machine Operator (Unlimited Capacity) issued by the NYC Fire Department and/or a Certificate for Hazardous Materials and/or a CFC Certificate issued by the EPA for handling refrigerants.
• All required certificates must be maintained during the assignment.
