Elevator Mechanic

nycha’s elevator services & repair department’s elevator mechanics are responsible for the maintenance and repair of elevator devices throughout the five boroughs. The selected candidate will undergo training on various controllers, troubleshooting, and understanding faults and safety procedures. The candidate must pass a final exam, be physically able to climb a minimum of a five‑story building, and be able to carry at least 25 lbs.

Of tools and equipment.

the elevator mechanic will report to the supervisor of elevator mechanics, working under close supervision with some latitude for independent judgment and initiative.

• respond to outages.
• perform monthly preventive maintenance.
• ensure nycha protocol and safety procedures are followed.
• communicate with the supervisor on outage status and issues related to restoring devices to service.
• utilize analytical reports received from the supervisor to determine the worst‑performing devices within the portfolio.

candidate must possess a new york state department of labor and new york city department of buildings elevator mechanic license, maintained throughout employment.

note: if this appointment is made on a provisional basis pursuant to 65 of the nys civil service law, no tenure or permanence accrues to an incumbent in this position by virtue of such appointment.

• five years of full‑time satisfactory experience acquired within the last ten years as an elevator mechanic; or
• not less than four and one‑half years of the experience described in "1" above plus one of the following:
  • at least 6 months of closely related experience in the repair and maintenance of electrical or electromechanical control systems, or electrical, hydraulic or mechanical components of escalators, drawbridges, aircraft, rail cars, or mechanical doors.
  • at least 600 hours of training acquired at a trade or technical school, vocational high school, or completed post‑secondary education approved by a state's department of education or comparable governmental agency, with a major course of study in mechanical, electromechanical, electrical, or electronic technology or closely related field.

at the time of appointment, candidates must possess a motor vehicle driver license valid in the state of new york. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
