About

The Role

Lantern Community Services is seeking an experienced and dependable Shift Supervisor for Hudson Bay, an all-female adult shelter in the Bronx serving 200 women aged 55 and older. The Shift Supervisor is responsible for overseeing shelter operations during assigned shifts and supervising a team of Residential Aides. This role works in close coordination with Social Services, Maintenance, and Security staff to ensure safe, consistent, and client-centered service delivery.

The Shift Supervisor reports to the Director of Program Operations and is expected to have prior experience in site management, staff supervision, and supporting clients experiencing mental health challenges.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee daily shelter operations during assigned shifts, including bed sign‑ins, curfew checks, supply distribution, meal rosters, dorm inspections, logbooks, and incident reporting.
  • Supervise and support Residential Aides to ensure safe, consistent, and client‑centered service delivery.
  • Ensure residents have timely access to essential services such as meals, laundry, toiletries, and medications.
  • Respond to emergencies and critical incidents using Safe Crisis Management practices.
  • Ensure accurate intake and documentation for new and returning clients, including DHS submissions and bed assignments.
  • Monitor CARES for bed sign‑ins, vacancies, and curfew compliance.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance, Security, vendors, and emergency responders as needed.
  • Monitor safety systems, including video surveillance and fire prevention/detection alarms.
  • Complete required documentation, including shift logs, incident reports, and DHS reporting.
  • Conduct regular facility rounds to identify safety hazards, cleanliness issues, and unauthorized activity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisory staff.
Required

Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma, HSE, or GED required;
    Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of shelter experience in a Residential Aide, Case Management, or similar role.
  • At least one (1) year of supervisory experience in a DHS shelter or supportive housing setting.
  • Strong crisis management skills and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word and Excel, with the ability to learn new systems and databases.
  • F‑80 Fire Safety Coordinator certification required or ability to obtain.
  • NYC Food Handler’s Certificate required or ability to obtain within three (3) months of employment.
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills, with demonstrated empathy for vulnerable populations.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred; CPR/First Aid certification a plus.
Work Environment

This job operates in a shelter environment and works with a population who experiences mental illness, addiction, disability, HIV, and other chronic illnesses.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, climb stairs and/ or kneel. Occasionally, the employee will have to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
