The Role

The Peer Specialist will work alongside the team to conduct outreach and engagement, educate clients about available resources, self‑help techniques, and skills for managing symptoms. They will demonstrate effective coping strategies and provide emotional and practical support to promote recovery and stability. This work is carried out in support of the mission and goals of Samaritan Daytop Village.

Responsibilities

What You Will Do

  • Conducts ongoing outreach and engagement activities to the population of focus to encourage program participation.
  • Establish a trusting relationship with the client based on mutual and unconditional positive regard during outreach and meetings in the community and various program settings.
  • Provides individualized support to individuals with a mental health diagnosis and/or substance use.
  • Serves as a role model, mentor, and advocate in order to help prevent relapse and promote long‑term recovery.
  • Provides strength‑based rehabilitative and recovery‑oriented services individually and as part of a team.
  • Supports the client in developing and implementing a person‑centered recovery plan relevant to the client’s current expressed needs, consistent with the Plan of Care.
  • Assists client with entitlements and concrete services, working together with client, advocates on client’s behalf via telephone and written correspondence.
  • Attends and participates in weekly supervision, staff meetings, and periodic in‑service trainings.
Qualifications

Who You Will Be

  • Someone with a High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma.
  • Minimum Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA) or CRPA‑Provisional for designated programs OR
  • New York Certified Peer Specialist (NYCPS) or NYCPS‑Provisional (NYCPS-P)
    OR
  • Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CARC) or OASAS‑approved 30‑Hour Recovery Coach Training for designated programs.
  • At least Two (2) years of work experience or volunteer experience in a recovery‑oriented setting.
  • Knowledge of substance use disorder recovery process.
  • Computer literacy including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
