Overview
Bronx Works helps individuals and families improve their economic and social well-being. From toddlers to seniors, we feed, shelter, teach, and support our neighbors to build a stronger community. Across our 60+ locations, we provide programs in a variety of service areas, including workforce development, children, youth, families, seniors and homeless prevention. The Rapid Rehousing Program for Survivors of Domestic Violence aims to mitigate homelessness in New York by supporting our clients with transitioning from shelter to permanent housing while also supporting small landlords in providing a safe place for survivors of domestic violence.
Our Housing Specialists provide comprehensive and timely support in finding a safe and secure housing unit, and our Aftercare Specialists help clients for approximately six months after their placement to become self-sufficient and financially independent.
- Engage Landlord Participants and educate them on the housing resources available, with the goal to connect them with tenants with housing vouchers.
- Help bridge communication gaps between Landlords and Tenants.
- Assist landlords in completing and submitting landlord packages
- Coordinate financial literacy workshops for Landlord Participants and Tenants.
- Conduct outreach and or establish relationships with Brokers and landlords by visiting their management offices.
- Search/secure safe, livable and affordable apartments and or rooms in small residential properties within the five boroughs of New York City.
- Operate Bronx Works’ vehicle, transport agency clients and conduct travel for long distances within New York City.
- Accompany clients to view apartments as needed.
- Complete field work as required.
- Maintain clean driver’s license so that you may escort clients in company car.
- Assist clients with navigation of various housing subsidy programs.
- Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study/High School diploma with relevant experience
- One year of experience providing services around housing is preferred.
- Two years of experience in a social service setting is preferred.
- Knowledge of housing resources for the homeless population and rental subsidies are strongly preferred.
- Bi-lingual (Spanish) and a valid driver’s license from the state of residence with less than three (3) violation points in the last three (3) years is also preferred.
- Engaging personality and detailed orientated skills are essential.
- Strong oral and written communication, time management and organizational skills are necessary.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and other standard business technology is required.
- Ability to use a computer for prolonged periods
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds
- Ability to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time
- Ability to climb five flights of stairs, if required to conduct home visits and/or fieldwork
- Ability to bend and retrieve objects and/or documents
- Ability to travel in the boroughs of New York City and its adjacent counties via public transportation
- Ability to travel for a minimum of 1 mile within a reasonable amount of time and in all types of weather, including inclement weather, if required to conduct home visits and/or field work
