Foster Care MIP Intern

Foster Care MIP Interns will be placed in approximately 12 week internships within SCO that will provide interns hands-on job experiences as well as support and guidance from internship mentors. Youth will be matched one-to-one with SCO internship mentors to facilitate successful internship experiences. Internship Mentors will provide valuable insights based on their career experience, educational backgrounds, and challenges they have faced on a professional and personal level.

Interns will work very closely with the MIP Coordinator, with whom they will meet at least once a week. Interns will participate in weekly Career Readiness Seminars and also take part in experiential group activities. Seminars will support interns:

• Identify a career goal and develop a career and education plan based on individual strengths and interests.
• Gain the knowledge and skills needed to transition successfully into the world of work (e.g., how to get jobs, succeed in the workplace, and understand workplace policies).
• Learn strategies to enhance their workplace relationships and manage challenges (e.g., how to request a workplace accommodation, and how to manage conflict in the workplace).

Qualifications - External

Strong sense of empathy towards populations served, and respect for cultural differences amongst clients and staff.

Ability to work competently, compassionately, and without judgment with individuals who may identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, or who may be in different stages of discovering or disclosing their sexual orientation or gender identity. Ability to have a flexible schedule. Good communication skills, time management skills, diligence, and resilience. Commitment to work as a team player. Ability to learn and respond constructively to feedback.

Ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders. Commitment to the mission and programs of SCO Family of Services.
