Job Summary

The Health Fund Social Worker reports directly to the Health Fund Senior Manager, Social Work. The Social Worker provides information on Fund benefits, community, governmental, and nonprofit programs when benefits are exhausted or not covered. They also offer counseling and emotional support to seriously ill or disabled members and families, serving as a liaison between Fund departments, benefit vendors, members’ employers, and union representatives.

The role is integral to the Health Fund’s health services unit.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assess and evaluate the needs of participants.
  • Provide supportive counseling, crisis intervention, information, and referral services; conduct entitlement counseling and advocacy for members and families.
  • Act as liaison between members and Fund vendors (e.g., WebTPA, Optum Rx, John Hancock).
    Act as health‑fund liaison between members requiring social‑work services and unions.
  • Participate in clinical rounds and collaborate with Health Services staff on appropriate cases requiring social‑work intervention.
  • Assist with coordinating requests for critical‑incident counseling at member work sites.
  • Help develop partnerships with community or government organizations.
  • Support the maintenance of a resource database.
  • Conduct educational presentations to Fund and Union staff about the social‑worker role.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of Fund benefits, resources, and entitlements.
  • Maintain records and statistics.
  • Serve as a resource for Fund and Union staff.
  • Participate in planning and administration of special projects as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Counsel and collaborate with the Social Work Assistant.
Qualifications (Competencies)
  • At least 2 years of counseling and social‑work experience.
  • Strong knowledge of the healthcare industry.
  • Background in welfare/trust funds a plus.
  • Outstanding analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word.
  • Excellent organizational and prioritizing skills.
  • Ability to work on simultaneous projects with diverse working groups.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to supervise personnel.
Education

Master’s degree and NY license in Social Work (L.M.S.W. or L.C.S.W.) required.

Language Skills

The ability to read, write, and understand English is essential. Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.

NY license in Social Work (L.M.S.W. or L.C.S.W.) required.
